The Moment.
March 21, 1970. Movie star Steve McQueen arrives at the 12 Hours of Sebring motor race on a mini scooter wearing a plaster cast on his left foot. He had broken his foot in six places two weeks earlier during a 100-mile motorcycle race in Lake Elsinore. Hours later he famously placed second with co-driver Peter Revson, narrowly beaten by legendary racer Mario Andretti by a margin of 23 seconds. The modified cast had sandpaper glued to the bottom to give McQueen grip on the clutch, which melted away by the end of the race.
